Hyundai to Debut Genesis in December
Hyundai Motor announced on Thursday that it will debut its high-end Genesis sedan in Korea in December. The rear-wheel sedan, which had been code-named BH, was originally scheduled to be introduced next March. The Genesis is Hyundai's luxury model designed to go up against the Lexus GS, Benz S-Class or BMW 5 Series.
A senior executive at Hyundai said the move is intended to capitalize on year-end company promotions. "Newly-promoted executives will be able to choose a new premium sedan next year," the executive said.
With Genesis, Hyundai plans to introduce a premium brand that will rival Toyota's Lexus, Nissan's Infiniti and Honda's Acura. Hyundai will launch the Genesis in the U.S. next March.
Genesis is a little bigger than the BMW 5 Series or Benz E-Class, at 497.5cm long, 186.5cm wide and 148.0cm high. The car comes with an automatic transmission made by Germany's ZF and a six-cylinder 280-horsepower Lambda engine or a 4.6 L, 8-cylinder 340-horsepower, Tau engine. At home the Genesis will come with a 3.8L engine, while in the U.S. buyers will be able to choose between the 3.8L and a 4.6L model. The price is not fixed but will likely range between W45 million and W60 million (US$1=W925).
The luxury sedan also features adaptive cruise control which uses radar to set the car's speed according to how fast the car ahead is traveling. Other high-tech gadgets include adaptive head lamps that change direction as the car moves.
