Union confident over Jaguar after Tata talks
By Pete Harrison
LONDON (Reuters) - A British labour union said on Friday it had held constructive talks with India's Tata Motors (TAMO.BO: Quote, Profile, Research) over its planned acquisition of Ford's (F.N: Quote, Profile, Research) luxury UK brands Jaguar and Land Rover.
Ford also reiterated there had been good progress in discussions with Tata and it was still expecting an agreement early in 2008.
"We are confident our members' long-term future is best served by Tata," said Dave Osborne, national secretary for vehicle building at the Unite union. "They totally ruled out offloading Jaguar or building Land Rovers in India."
Unite is the main union representing workers at Land Rover and Jaguar, and has about 12,000 members there.
Tata, India's top vehicle maker, and which unveiled the world's cheapest car last month, has been in talks with Ford since it was chosen as the front-runner to buy the units a few days into 2008.
Buying the luxury brands would give the Indian automaker a substantial presence outside India.
Ford has been exploring their sale since last June in an effort to shore up its balance sheet and reduce debt.
"There's a couple of clarifications we still need from Ford, but I don't see any issues arising from that," Unite's Osborne said.
He said Tata had given assurances that engines would still be taken from Ford and that UK manufacturing would be maintained.
All Jaguar and Land Rover's petrol engines are from a Ford plant in south Wales. Diesel engines come from Ford's factory in Dagenham.

Jaguar, Land Rover sale set for March 5 or 6
Tata Motors will announce its purchase of Jaguar and Land Rover on March 5 or 6.
The dates have been agreed between Tata and Ford Motor Co., which is selling the two luxury brands, following talks with union leaders last week.
Roger Maddison, national officer of Unite, the largest union in the UK auto industry, told Automotive News Europe that Tata had agreed to meet guarantees sought by union leaders.
He said, “Everything seems fine as far as we are concerned; it’s just the lawyers working on it now.”
Union leaders spoke with Ford and Tata to resolve final details before the drawing up of a memorandum of understanding for the sale.
In earlier talks with the two companies, unions had been seeking assurances that Tata would continue to source engines, stampings and other systems from Ford’s plants in Bridgend in Wales and Dagenham, near London.
All Jaguar and Land Rover engines come from Ford plants, as do many of Land Rover’s stampings.
While Ford would not comment officially on the planned announcement date, insiders confirmed to ANE that March 5 or 6 were “not too far off track.”
A Ford source ruled out any kind of announcement at next week’s Geneva motor show, where the first press day is on Tuesday, March 4.
At Geneva, Ford is launching a new version of its second-biggest seller, the Fiesta small car.
The source said an announcement of a deal with Tata would be held back to avoid overshadowing the debut of this key new model.
“The sooner everything goes through, the better,” said Maddison. “The work forces are beginning to get anxious.”
