Audi Sport announced today that it will build a racing version of the Audi R8 for customers that want to unleash more power on the track - and by more power we mean 500 horsepower. The Audi R8 GT3 is under development right now and space is being allocated at the automakers factory in Neckarsulm and Gyor.
Built on a rear-wheel-drive architecture the Audi R8 GT3 transfers power to the wheels via a new 6-speed sequential sports gearbox with suspension components taken from the regular production R8. Audi slightly modified the front and end and added a large rear-wing to improve aerodynamics.
First test races are scheduled for the 2009 season with deliveries to commence in the autumn of next year.
