This was the second go-round for Honda's CR-Z concept, and we still like it. It's our Best in Show for Tokyo 2009. We'll see the production version in Detroit in January.

    Tokyo Motor Show
The 2009 edition of the Tokyo auto show was smaller—108 exhibitors compared with 241 in 2007—and quieter as almost all non-Japanese carmakers pulled out.
Still, the show did have high points, such as the production version of the Lexus LFA supercar, the promisingly spritely Toyota FT-86, and plenty of the goofy little Kei cars we can never hope to get in America but love to ogle anyway.
Some of these high points will be hitting the road in the United States in the near future. So here are the AutoWeek Editor's Choice award winners from Tokyo 2009

BEST IN SHOW: Honda CR-Z Concept 2009

We're not saying there wasn't much in the way of new hardware on the show floor in Tokyo, but the AutoWeek editors make their decision on Best in Show in less than two minutes of discussion—and the first minute and a half was taken up talking about the warm weather enveloping the Makuhari Messe.
Yes, we've seen the CR-Z before, when it was first announced at this show two years ago. And we loved it then. Now that it's closer to production (this was labeled a concept, as the production two-seat version we get in the States next year will be shown in Detroit in January), we love it even more. With a 1.5-liter gasoline engine fitted with Honda's Integrated Motor Assist hybrid technology, the CR-Z will be the first hybrid with a six-speed manual gearbox. That, we hope, makes it a different kind of hybrid, one that returns as sporting of a driving experience as the CR-Z's design promises. Even though this is a concept, we'd love to drive this car just as it sat on the stand, cool wheels and all.

    MOST FUN: Yamaha EC-f

Yes, it's a motorcycle. This is the first time we've ever selected a motorcycle as best-of-anything at a car show. Part of the reason for that is the pickings were mighty slim this year, and part of it was because the dang thing just looks like fun. It's an electric commuter bike made for easy riding, i.e. accessible to anyone of any age. Technical data were scarce, since the bike is mostly a styling exercise. But the idea of a stylish electric scooter has to have legs in a good number of markets worldwide, doesn't it?

    BEST CONCEPT: Toyota FT-86

Toyota "launched many, many sports cars in the past, including the Levin and Trueno 'haichi roku' models, the Supra, Altezza and MR-S," said Toyota president Akio Toyoda, speaking at the show. "The fact that none of these vehicles is still being produced makes me, a serious car fan, really sad." And when the president gets sad, the sad get going. Toyota unveiled this promising concept sports car at Tokyo. The Subaru-based, rear-drive, two-door four-seater is powered by a 2.0-liter Subaru flat-four driving the rear wheels, the latter of which precious few "sports" cars do anymore. At least not for the FT-86's planned price of less than $30,000. We can't wait for the production version so we can enter the Formula D series. Not that we'd ever do that with a press car.

    MOST SIGNIFICANT: Mitsubishi PX-MiEV Concept

In a show bereft of exciting world introductions, most companies attached a lot of significance to their work on electric vehicles and hybrids. Out of that field, we picked the PX-MiEV—not just for the fact that most of what you see will appear as the next-gen Outlander, or because the PX-MiEV essentially is Mitsubishi's Chevrolet Volt-like range-extender hybrid that will be on sale by 2013. More important is that the hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain telegraphed by this concept also will find its way into all future Mitsubishis, including the Lancer. That makes this the first building block to a future hybrid Evolution.
