Volkswagen said it will recall a total of around 300 000 Passat cars worldwide due to possible technical problems.
Volkswagen spokesperson Hans-Gerd Bode told Dow Jones Newswires that "a bit more than 300 000" vehicles are affected. He declined to specify the expected costs for the recall, which affects cars of the model years 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Volkswagen said in a statement that some Passat cars of the model year 2006 have a wiper motor that might fail in heavy rain due to "excessive moisture entering the wiper motor". "If this happens, reduced visibility could result," it said.
"Also, some 2.0T engine-equipped 2006 and 2007 Passat sedans and some 2007 Passat wagons may have a power brake vacuum line that may fracture and become disconnected at low ambient temperatures," Volkswagen said.
If this happens, the brake power assistant might fail and "the driver will experience increased effort to apply the brake," the group said.
In North America, around 62 000 vehicles could be affected, Europe's biggest auto maker by sales said.
On its German home market 130 000 Passat models are affected, it said.
Holders of the car will be informed by the company, and the planned technical check will take around one hour at the most.
On a group level, the carmaker delivered more than 5.2m vehicles to customers in the first 11 months of the year, up 9.9% from the same period last year. Revamped versions of its Passat and Jetta models helped boosting sales at the company's core VW brand in 2006.
